5- I can learn math.
Give the statements above some thought, then watch this VIDEO: Four Key Messages About Math and consider the following:
1- People who are good at math have a "Math Brain".
The truth is, regardless of what you have heard or experienced, there is no such thing as a math brain; everyone has a brain that is capable of growing and learning math.
2- People who are good at math don't struggle or make mistakes.
The truth is, everyone struggles and make mistakes when doing math. Mistakes are actually a good thing and you are expected to make plenty of them; your teacher will even make mistakes! Our brains actually grow the most when we struggle because new pathways are formed. Making mistakes and struggling strengthens pathways in our brains and makes them more powerful.
3- People who are good at math are fast.
The truth is, although it's nice to be fast, the most important thing when learning math is to work hard and grow your brain. Just because something is done fast, doesn't mean it is done correctly.
4- People who are good at math think math is easy.
The truth is, most people, even those who are good at math, find it a very difficult subject. The rules and logic of math are often foreign and strange. So, most mathematicians are just normal people who enjoy how hard math is and who like figuring things out.
5- I can learn math.
The truth is, you can learn math. However, having a good attitude and believing that you can learn will have a huge impact on how much you learn and grow. No matter what has happened in the past, you can grow your brain and learn math. Keep this in mind as you work hard to learn: You may not use the math, but you will definitely use your brain! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
